Many Bengali families living abroad want their children to stay connected with Bengali songs, language and culture. Live online classes make this possible without leaving home. Here is how they work and how to get the best from them.
How an online class works
Classes are held live on video call, one-to-one or in a small group. The teacher listens to the student sing, corrects pitch, pronunciation and rhythm in real time, and demonstrates the right way. After class, notation and recordings can be shared so the child can practise.
What you need
- A phone, tablet or laptop with a stable internet connection
- Earphones, which cut down background noise and echo
- A quiet corner of the house
- A tanpura or harmonium app (helpful, and not necessary for the first classes)
Time zones
Kolkata is ahead of most places where families live. The usual solution is a weekend slot or an early evening or morning slot that works for both sides. Tell the teacher your time zone when you enquire, and we will try to find a regular time that suits.
Will my child learn Bengali songs even if they speak little Bengali?
Yes. Many children abroad understand Bengali but speak mainly English. Singing is a gentle way to build vocabulary and pronunciation. The teacher goes phrase by phrase, explains the meaning of the words, and the child learns by repeating. Songs like Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Geeti and simple children's songs are a lovely start.
How parents can help
- Sit nearby for the first few classes, then step back as your child settles in
- Help set up the device and the app before class starts
- Play the song at home so the tune becomes familiar
- Encourage short daily practice, even 10 to 15 minutes
- Celebrate small wins, like finishing a verse or performing for family on a video call
Realistic expectations: progress comes from regular practice. Online classes give the guidance, and the daily practice at home does the rest.
What can children learn online?
- Rabindra Sangeet for Bengali songs and culture
- Hindustani classical vocal basics for a strong foundation
- Nazrul Geeti, Bengali modern and Hindi songs
