"Should my child learn classical first or go straight to Rabindra Sangeet?" It is one of the most common questions we hear. The good news is that you do not have to pick one and give up the other.
What each one gives you
Hindustani classical vocal
- A strong sense of sur (pitch) and taal (rhythm)
- Breath control and voice flexibility through alankar and sargam
- Understanding of ragas, which are the base of many songs
- Discipline in regular riyaaz
Rabindra Sangeet
- A deep connection with Bengali poetry and culture
- Clear pronunciation and emotional expression (bhav)
- A large, beautiful repertoire that is enjoyable from the start
- Singing in a simple, restrained style
Why they work well together
Many Rabindra Sangeet songs are built on ragas and talas, and Tagore was influenced by Hindustani classical music. A student who understands the basics of swara and taal will pick up these songs more easily and sing them with a steadier voice. In the same way, a song-based course keeps children interested while they build their basics.
Our approach at Surmandal: every student gets grounding in classical basics, whichever style they want to sing in the end. Rabindra Sangeet students learn songs from early on, so the class stays enjoyable.
A simple way to decide
- Your child loves songs and keeps humming tunes: start with Rabindra Sangeet or simple songs, with basic swara work alongside.
- Your child is older and likes structured practice: classical basics will feel rewarding and will help every style later.
- An adult beginner who wants to sing Tagore songs: begin with basic voice work and tune holding, then move to songs quickly.
- Not sure at all: try a trial class and let the teacher hear the voice.
Is classical music required before Rabindra Sangeet?
No. Many people learn Rabindra Sangeet directly and sing it well. But even a few months of basics (finding sa, simple alankar, one or two taals) usually makes learning faster and the singing more confident.
What about modern or film songs?
The same logic applies. Basic training helps with pitch, breath and stage confidence, whatever you sing later. Our Nazrul, modern and light vocal course builds on those basics.
